  • Pre-Course Study: 9 hours of pre-course study, to include Course Study Book, Pre-Course Assessment Questionnaire, and E-Learning Modules CDM Awareness - Basic Fire Awareness - Fire Extinguishers - Fire Doors, with study material and E-Learning courses provided by the trainer.

  • Course Duration: 16 hours of study spread over two consecutive days.

  • After-Course Task: (5-7hrs) Completion of a practical construction fire risk assessment on a candidate's construction project, applying a fire risk assessment template that will be provided as part of the course, and has been created following PAS79.

Course Content:

Element 1 – Introduction to Legislation and Guidance: Overview of relevant fire risk assessment laws and guidelines.

Element 2 – Construction Phase Plan: Development of fire safety measures within the construction phase plan.

Element 3 – Managing Fire Safety: Strategies for managing fire safety on low-risk construction projects.

Element 4 – Principles of Fire and Explosion: Understanding the basics of fire and explosion on construction sites.

Element 5 – Control Measures: Identification and management of fuel, oxygen, and ignition sources.

Element 6 – Firefighting and Protection: Techniques and equipment for firefighting and protection on construction sites.

Element 7 – Safety of People in the Event of Fire: Ensuring the safety of relevant persons, and others during a fire.

Element 8 – Fire Safety Risk Assessment: Preparation and delivery of a fire safety risk assessment on a low-risk construction site.

Assessment

  • In-Course Assessment: Candidates complete a construction fire risk assessment based on a specimen/example site using established frameworks and standards, including Home Office fire guidance.

  • Practical Assessment: Candidates undertake a fire risk assessment on one of their ongoing construction projects using a standardised template that follows PAS79. Assessments must be submitted within a 3-month period for evaluation by external examiners, who provide feedback and a Pass or Fail grade.
