November mean MOVember……. But what does it all mean?
Movember is the leading men’s foundation which helps to tackle 3 main areas in men’s health; mental health, prostate health and testicular health. A growing number of men – around 10.8M globally – are facing life with a prostate cancer diagnosis. Globally, testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men. And across the world, one man dies by suicide every minute of every day, with males accounting for 69% of all suicides.
Mental health
In the UK, 3 out of 4 suicides are by men. Movember wants to focus on prevention, early intervention and promoting good mental health. The charity wants to education, get men involved in conversations and reach out for help and services in the community. We can all work towards a world where men take action to be mentally well, and we can all support them in this.
To speak with someone immediately, contact NHS 111 on 111 or contact Samaritans on 116 123.
If you're ever worried that someone's life is in immediate danger, call 999 or go directly to emergency services.
Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the UK. There are approx. 395,000 men living with prostate cancer and also dealing with some serious side effects from the treatment. Movember is there pushing for funding into more research. They have brought together researchers and experts across the world in a bid to develop detection and treatment. However, they are also there to push for support. There are often tough decisions to be made and men need to make an informed decision, with the support and guidance behind them.
Since 2011 Movember has committed $43million AUD to global research projects linked to prostate and testicular cancer alone.
Testicular Cancer
Did you know that testicular cancer is the most common type of cancer in young men in the UK. Movember is here to help raise awareness of the signs of this cancer, support through treatment and the subsequent after effects of this treatment, which can be life changing. Movember has funded the largest study of testicular tumors to date! This led to groundbreaking discoveries and massively improved our understanding of cancer and how to treat it!
Movember started in 2003 in Australia, and raised $0, with only 30 men willing to try the challenge! It 2021 it was worldwide, with over 6 million joining the cause and has funded over 12500 men’s health projects.
“Our fathers, partners, brothers and friends are facing a health crisis, yet it’s rarely talked about. Men are dying too young. We can’t afford to stay silent.”
