Insight from Chelsie - Safety in the Sun

As we enjoy the recent beautiful weather, it is crucial to be aware of the potential dangers of the sun and take steps to protect ourselves. According to Cancer Research UK, nearly 9 out of 10 cases of melanoma skin cancer in the UK could be prevented by practicing sun safety and avoiding sun-beds.

Overexposure to the sun can have harmful effects on the eyes and skin, leading to skin cancer. It's important to note that you don't have to experience sunburn to increase your risk of developing skin cancer. Every time your skin is exposed to UV radiation, your risk of cancer increases.

Repeated sunburns can have long-term consequences, such as premature wrinkling and an increased risk of skin cancer. Sunburn can damage the DNA of cells, potentially leading to the development of abnormal cells and cancer over time. It's important to remember that UV rays are still powerful on cloudy days.

While some sun exposure is beneficial for obtaining vitamin D, it's essential to strike a balance and protect your skin from excessive sun exposure. In the UK, the sun can be strong enough to cause damage between mid-March and mid-October, even on cooler or cloudy days.

To prevent sunburn and skin damage, follow these three steps:

  1. Spend time in the shade, particularly between 11am and 3pm.

  2. Cover up with clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and UV protection sunglasses.

  3. Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and a rating of 4 or 5 stars. Be generous with application, reapply regularly, and combine sunscreen use with shade and protective clothing.

Enjoy the wonderful weather while it lasts, but remember to prioritise your safety and protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays.
